“People have one thing in common: they are all different.”-Robert Sward
When you look at the various components, assets and structure of your company, organization or department, it’s important to know your company’s greatest assets. Without a doubt, your people are your greatest assets and regardless of the knowledge or experience you possess as a leader and business owner, those traits are not worth much if you are not able to achieve results through other people. The focus for the next few weeks will be on people management. Why not employee management? The reason is simple: We never want to forget that our employees are people, not property.
All humans are complex and unique. We must appreciate that every one of our employees is a unique person with different wants, needs and desires. However, there are common needs all employees have from their leader. Whether you have one employee or 10,000 employees, they are craving for strong leadership.
All too frequently, many business owners and managers complain that employees cause a majority of their headaches. So what are the reasons? Why do employees cause so many headaches? The answer lies in the way they are led and managed. No matter what the employee problems are, realize that we are ultimately responsible. For our employee’s headaches to diminish, it is up to us and our management team. We must change things. Remember, your business is where it is and how it is because of you.Likewise, your employees are the way they are because of you, your systems, your policies, your training, your unwillingness to make tough calls, etc. You are 100% responsible for the good and bad in your company.
Keep reminding yourself and your management team that the greatest assets of your business are your people! Your leadership and other strengths are not worth much if you are not able to achieve leverage and results through other people.
Continue to stay committed to the process of individual and business improvement. Stay focused on the critical activities and goals, the 20% of your activities that generate 80% of the return of your investment of time, energy and money that will drive you towards your vision of success!
