In a previous blog post, I explored a popular quote often misattributed to Albert Einstein: “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” This idea echoes another profound insight actually from Einstein: “We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”
As business owners, we pride ourselves on self-reliance and independence. Our deep commitment to our enterprises is undeniable—who knows our business better or cares more than we do? However, this same self-reliance can sometimes be a double-edged sword. When facing challenges, we often turn to what we know, employing the same knowledge and approaches that led to the problems in the first place. This cycle can keep us trapped in ineffective patterns, unable to see the forest for the trees.
The reality is that when we are deeply entrenched in a situation, it’s difficult to step back and view our circumstances objectively. We become so ingrained in our ways of thinking that distinguishing between helpful and harmful becomes a challenge. This is where the proverbial “insanity” ensues—repeating the same actions but expecting new outcomes.
Achieving different results requires a shift in perspective. It demands that we seek external insights and embrace new knowledge. A mentor of mine once shared a powerful analogy during a consultation: “We can’t read the label on our own water bottle, because we are inside the bottle. We need someone outside the bottle to read the label for us.” This perspective is crucial for breaking out of old patterns and fostering innovation and growth.
If you’re struggling to see your business from a fresh angle and are ready for change, don’t hesitate to reach out. Engaging with external experts or mentors can provide the new viewpoints necessary to move your business forward. Let us help you read the label.
